In a severe road accident, a truck collided with an auto-rikshaw in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Saturday morning killing at least eight people while two others were left critically injured, reported PTI. The accident took place at Chandol when the victims hailing from Macchagaon were returning after attending a ceremonial ‘Snana Purnima’ ritual at Nemala, as Inspector-in-Charge of Jagatsinghpur police station, Rajnikant Mishra told the agency. Out of the eight dead, seven lost their lives on the spot. Among dead, a teenager was also reported while another succumbed to injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital, Mishra added. The injured were first taken to the district headquarters hospital and were later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack as their condition deteriorated, the IIC said.
The truck driver is yet to be identified as he allegedly fled away from the spot and efforts are being made to trace him. Asking for an immediate arrest of the driver, a blockade was imposed by the local residents on Jagatsinghpur- Machhagaon road near Chandol. To maintain the law and order and prevent any untoward incident effectively the police personnel have deployed additional force in the area where the incident took place.
In a similar incident that took place in May this year, at least two persons were killed and 35 others were injured, in two separate road accidents in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj and Kandhamal districts, reported PTI. The incident took place in the wee hours when the bus carrying passengers was proceeding to Rourkela from Berhampur. The injured were taken to the district headquarters hospital, Phulbani and two of them were later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
Meanwhile, a helicopter crash took place in Uttarakhand this morning and two pilots were injured as the chopper failed to take off from the Himalayan shrine. As per a PTI report, two pilots of the helicopter suffered injuries but five passengers were reported safe. The authorities have ordered a probe into the incident and a team has been sent to the site for further investigation.
