Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam chaired the first cabinet meeting in Jayalalithaa’s absence, with a potrait of the Amma in front of him.
Since the Chief Minister got admitted to the hospital on September 22, government officials have been following a standard to keep the potrait of Jayalalithaa on the desk at all high-level meetings. The governor’s officials handed over all the official portfolio of the ailing CM on October 11 after the doctors confirmed that Jayalalithaa will have to stay under treatment for a longer period of time.
The latest cabinet meeting in the absence of Jayalalithaa, took place as the governor C Vidyasagar Rao cleared the decks for the government to pass ordinance to appoint councillors and mayors for governing local bodies by October 24. The meeting at the secretariate at Fort St George, lasted for an hour starting from 9:30, with only two senior leaders who had been part of earlier cabinets chaired by Jayalalithaa.
Jayalalithaa had been admitted to the Apollo hospitals on September 22 with complaints of fever and dehydration and is presently treated for lung ailment by a team of specialists from London and the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS). The ministry informed that Jayalalithaa is being informed with the details of the Wednesday’s meeting and she is keeping an track to all the proceedings from the hospital bed.
