Even as the farmers protest in Madhya Pradesh is abating, the Congress party has announced that it will be holding a farmers ‘demonstration’ in Rajasthan. The party has decided to hold a state-wide demonstration on June 14 across all, 33 districts of Rajasthan, Congress leader, and MP Sachin Pilot said. Farmers demanding a loan waiver and higher remuneration for their crops had gone on a 10-day protest in neighboring Madhya Pradesh. Six farmers were killed during the during the protests in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh.
The Congress party had been very critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its handling of the farmers protest in Madhya Pradesh. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had attempted to go to Mandsaur to meet the family members of those killed in police firing. The Congress Vice President was not allowed to enter the then strife-hit district and was briefly detained by the Madhya Pradesh police before being allowed to meet the kin of those killed during the violence.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan broke off his ‘indefinite fast’ on Sunday at Bhopal’s Dussehra Maidan. The Chief Minister had been fasting for restoration of peace in the state. Chouhan began his ‘indefinite fast’ on Saturday.
The Congress party’s Randeep Surjewala said, ”The fast is a sham, the CM should answer why a murder case was not filed over the death of five farmers in the state.” Mandsaur remained peaceful on Sunday, however, Section 144, which restricts more than four people from gathering at a place is still in force.
