People of Bihar have set up a new record and they cannot be very proud of it. Among all railway stations of the country, where free Wi-Fi service was launched, Patna railway station tops the chart for using the internet search. Alas, what they search the most with free Wi-Fi is porn.

Under Danapur Division of East Central Railway, Patna was the first station in Bihar to get free Wi-Fi facility. IANS reports a Railtel official as saying that people are using free Wi-Fi for Youtube and Wikipedia at the station. But porn sites have been watched and downloaded more than anything else at the station, according to the official. Some people also download apps, Bollywood and Hollywood films.

One may say that what people watch or read on the internet should be their personal choice. What can a state do in this regard? Of course, the state cannot dictate people’s preferences. But it can certainly guide them how to use a resource for more fruitful purposes.

Watching and downloading porn on public money, I believe even the most addicted porn fan in a big city would not approve of. Having said this, the record created by people at Patna station needs to be seen as an example of how people in states like Bihar do not know how to use the internet for more fruitful purposes.

Smartphones have reached even some of the remotest villages of the state. New internet users, even school-going teenagers, do not know what to do with the internet if not using it for entertainment. Some download songs, some movies and many are hooked to porn sites. The porn addiction has spread to such an extent that people across the state have set up shops, selling cheap porn to new smartphone users.

Digital revolution in India has been a one-eyed change process, triggered by cheap smartphones and internet but not by the awareness of how to use the internet for meaningful purposes like gaining knowledge, boosting business or making a career out of the internet.

In states like Bihar, the blame for much of this goes to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has not done anything good but wrecked education during his over 10 years rule in the state.

Nitish can ban liquor but not train or remove useless teachers training the future of the state. What would they do when they will have more free access to the internet in the coming years? Can Nitish answer this question?
