Veteran cricketer and former Rajya Sabha MP Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur today joined Congress party along with ex-Akali MLA Pargat Singh. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh welcomed both leaders in the party at an event in New Delhi. Earlier, there was much speculation that Navjot Singh Sidhu could join Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Kaur first openly appeared in front of media after her husband’s resignation from ‘Upper House’, since then she was working as an active spokesperson for him. But on September 8, they formed a new ‘party’ named ‘Awaaz-E-Punjab’. However, speculation about Awaaz-E-Punjab’s merger in Congress was also there but there was no clarity. Now, after Kaur joined Congress she has indicated that her husband’s entry in Congress would happen soon enough. On a pointed question about Navjot Singh Sindhu joining Congress, she said, “Hum do shareer, ek aatma hai, fir ek durse ke bina kab tak reh paenge?”

For AAP, the decision came as a jolt as it was expecting to take advantage of Sidhu’s image in the upcoming assembly election in Punjab.
Assembly election is due in the state early next year and political blame-game is already going on. Though all parties are campaigning but as a new player in the state all eyes are on AAP, which has promised to appoint a ‘dalit’ deputy chief minister after party’s triumph.
