Prime Minister Narendra Modi had kick started his crucial four-nation tour. PM Modi’s reached Germany yesterday and had a very good and fruitful interaction with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. During the meeting, both the leaders had discussed an array of issues. Among the issues that featured in the meeting were Brexit, terrorism, Afghanistan as well as China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, according to reports. This is PM Modi’s second visit to the European country and he would there for two days.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders discussed Afghanistan and reiterated their support for an Afghan led and Afghan owned reconciliation and development process. There was discussion also on the issue of radicalization and terrorism and each countries experience in dealing with this.” PM Modi also lauded Germany’s presence in Afghanistan to provide stability in that country. The Prime Minister also called upon the need for consolidation of efforts, ANI report says. “The leaders also touched upon OBOR (one Belt One Road). There was some discussion on climate change issues and the leaders discussed the possibilities including in the G 20 contact, there was exchange also on happenings in the international arena,” said the MEA.

PM Modi and Merkel also reviewed Brexit and effects on India and Germany. The also talked about the future of the European Union (EU). Apart from these, other major discussion was on how Germany can partner with India on its flagship programs including skill development, energy sector, environment, smart cities and digital India.
PM Modi and Merkel had a walk in the grounds of Schloss Meseberg, the official state guest house of the German Chancellor. Schloss Meseberg is an 18th century Baroque castle in the Brandenburg district of Germany. “Had a very good interaction with Chancellor Merkel,” PM Modi said in a tweet after his meeting which began by signing of the visitors’ book at Schloss Meseberg.
Today is the second day and more formal engagements of PM Modi’s visit are lined-up.
PM Modi will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Chancellery, the office of the German Chancellor, following which he will hold formal talks with Merkel as part of the India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations [IGC] today.
PM Modi and Chancellor Merkel will also conduct a meeting with senior business leaders before inaugurating the Indo-German Business Forum.
PM Modi will end his German tour with a courtesy call on German President, Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at his official residence of Castle Bellevue before leaving for Spain.
