Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 9.15-km India’s longest Dhola-Sadiya bridge on the Brahmaputra at Sadiya. Apart from this, Modi also inaugurated a slew of projects in the state. The Prime Minister addressed a rally in Guwahati.  After leading BJP to a resounding victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, he was sworn-in as the prime minister on May 26. The central government is banking big on the bridge to transform the road connectivity in the North-East.

3:55 pm: Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday attacked the BJP-led central government for trying to take credit for the newly constructed longest bridge on Lohit river in Assam, saying that it was the “brainchild” of the Congress.

3:40 pm: “Today is one of the greatest days for the people of Assam as the India’s longest and Asia’s second longest Dhola-Sadiya bridge is inaugurated by Prime Miniser Narendra Modi,” Gogoi said in a series of tweets.

11:50 am: For the Brahmaputra River after Kaliabor Bridge in Central Assam throughout the 375 km of river bank there is no bridge for transportation across the Brahmaputra River. In the upstream after 120 km there is a bridge available for crossing the same but it travels through difficult hilly terrain on north bank.

11:47 am: At present all the transport are being carried out through water only. The bridge project will enhance the entire transport system of North Assam.

11:45 am: The bridge is a 12.9-metre-wide or 42 feet external post tensioned one with 183 spans each of 50 meters or 160 feet) along with a two-lane connecting road from Dhola Bazaar to Islampur Tiniali.

11:40 am: The bridge was scheduled to become operational from December 2015, but finish of construction works was delayed. The project cost around 10 billion rupees and has taken about six years to complete.

11:25 am: After the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi is expected to proceed to Gogamukh in Northern Assam’s Dhemaji district to lay the foundation stone for Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI). He will then leave for Guwahati at around 1.50 p.m., where he will lay the foundation stone of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the first such institute come up in the Northeast.

10:15: PM Narendra Modi’s today’s schedule in Assam

  1. PM Modi will open the 9.15-km Dhola-Sadiya bridge on the Brahmaputra at Sadiya.
  2. The Prime Minister will fly to Gogamukh in Dhemaji district on the north bank to lay the foundation stone for an ICAR research centre.
  3. He will also lay the foundation stone for an AIIMS at Changsari.
  4. Finally, PM Modi will address the nation and a rally in Guwahati.

10:00 am: The total length of the Dhola-Sadiya bridge project, including the approach roads on each side, is 28.50 km. The length of the bridge itself is 9.15 km.

9:55 am: It has been constructed on BOT (build, operate, transfer) annuity basis at a total cost of Rs 2,056 crore, as part of the Arunachal Package of Roads and Highways under the Ministry’s Special Accelerated Road Develoopment Programme for North East (SARDP-NE).

9:45 am: The government said it will also cater to the strategic requirements of the country in the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh, besides facilitating numerous hydro power projects
coming up in the state, as it is the most sought-after route for various power project developers.

9:30 am: The Dhola-Sadiya bridge promises to usher in prosperity in the North-East, it said adding, it will provide efficient road connectivity to remote and backward areas which have poor road infrastructure. This bridge will also give a major boost to overall economic development of the areas north of Brahmaputra in upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

9:15 am: The travel time between the two places will come down from the current six hours to just one hour. This will result in saving of petrol and diesel worth Rs 10 lakh per day, the
statement said.

9:00 am: The bridge will also reduce the distance from Rupai on NH-37 in Assam to Meka/Roing on NH-52 in Arunachal Pradesh by 165 KM.

8:45 am: This new, three lane, 9.15 kilometre bridge has been built at a cost of about Rs 2,056 crore over river Lohit, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, linking Dhola in Assam to Sadiya in Arunachal Pradesh. “The bridge will fill a huge connectivity gap that has existed in the region. Till now, the only means to cross the Brahmaputra at this location has been by ferry only in day-time and even this was not possible during floods,” the Ministry of Shipping said in a statement.

7:30 am: State-run SAIL is the largest supplier of steel for the country’s longest river bridge — Dhola-Sadiya. The PSU has supplied around 90 per cent, or around 30,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT, structurals and plates, for the bridge, which has been built on the Lohit connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

7:25 am: “The product mix offered by SAIL was one of the major criteria for selection of the company for this prestigious project. The construction of this 9.15-km long bridge began in 2011 under the public-private-partnership, which is 3.55 km longer than Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, making it the longest bridge in India,” it said.

7:20 am: The 9.15-km-long bridge will reduce the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to just one hour as the distance will shrink by 165 kms.
