Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a rally in Bhatinda, Punjab today and lay the foundation of an AIIMS hospital which will be built on 177 acres of land at a cost of Rs 925 crore. The is his first visit to Bathinda after becoming the PM. During 2014 General Elections, PM Modi had addressed a rally for Harsimrat Badal.

Amidst Opposition uproar over demonetisation across the country, PM Modi will also address a rally after laying the foundation stone of AIIMS. According to an IE report, around 1,700 buses have been deployed to ferry people from the adjoining Assembly constituencies of Bathinda, Faridkot, Muktsar, two constituencies of Mansa and one constituency of Barnala to the rally. The report said that hiring of buses alone would cost Rs 80 lakh.

About 40,000 chairs have been arranged for people at the venue. However, SAD leaders said they are expecting around one lakh people.

IE quoted Charanjeet Singh Brar, OSD to Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, as saying: “We are aiming for one lakh people. Apart from 1,700 buses, an equal number of cars will also be there to ferry people. It will be a show of strength as AIIMS project is very prestigious for us.” Asked about the expenditure, he said, “It is a government function. I have no idea.”

After Bhatinda, PM Modi will participate in another event at Anandpur Sahib. AIIMS, Bhatinda is expected to be completed in 2 years. A medical college for 100 students and nursing college of 60 students will also be set up at the site.

PM Modi’s rally is significant for BJP ahead of the crucial Assembly election in the state. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s recent rallies in the state have attracted huge crowds in the state. During his speech, PM Modi is expected to speak on demonetisation and his war against corruption. This may further annoy the Opposition leaders as the PM has so far refused to accept their demand to debate on demonetisation in the Parliament.
