The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Kerala government to file the reply on the plea put forward by the Tamil Nadu government, seeking permission to maintain the Mullaperiyar dam. The SC bench, comprising of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justices DY Chandrachud and SK Kaul, has sought a response from the Kerala government
Tamil Nadu government alleged that its PWD workers were not even being allowed to keep materials that were necessary for the dam’s maintenance. Further, the Tamil Nadu government has also sought a direction from the apex court to direct Kerala to implement SC’s verdict on the same that was delivered in May 2014.
As per the cited judgment, the Supreme Court had held that the 120-year-old Mullaperiyar dam is safe and Tamil Nadu had been granted the right to maintain the dam. It was also directed to increase the height of water storage of the Mullaperiyar dam to 142 feet.

The Mullaperiyar dam row is one that has caused considerable tensions between the Tamil Nadu and Kerala states. The 120-year old dam is located in Idukki district, Kerala and it is administered by the Tamil Nadu government.
