RSS slams Rahul Gandhi over remarks on women in Sangh

The RSS on Wednesday hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his remarks that he had not seen any woman attending Sangh ‘shakhas’ in “shorts” and said those scripting speeches for the Congress vice president have no understanding of the Sangh. The RSS said Gandhi’s remark was like looking for women in a men’s hockey team. “On a serious note, the thing is that the people, who are scripting his (Rahul’s) speeches don’t understand the Sangh properly. The Sangh has been working since the past so many years and its work is different,” RSS spokesperson Manmohan Vaidya said when asked by reporters to comment on Gandhi’s remarks.

56 percent polling in Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll

The high-stakes Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll recorded a 56 per cent voter turnouton Wednesday, lower than 70.03 per cent recorded in the 2014 general elections.  Voting at 1,781 polling stations passed off peacefully, officials said.  The bypoll is being seen as a barometer for the popularity of the six-month-old Congress government in Punjab.  The seat, which had fallen vacant following the demise of actor-turned-politician Vinod Khanna of the BJP in April, is witnessing a three-horse race between the Congress, the BJP and the AAP.  While the Congress has fielded its Punjab unit chief Sunil Jakhar, the BJP has put up businessman Swaran Salaria. The AAP has placed a bet on Major General (retd) Suresh Khajuria.

Airtel offers 4G smartphone at ‘effective price’ of Rs 1,399

India’s largest operator Bharti Airtel on Wednesday said it has tied-up with Karbonn Mobiles to bring bundled 4G smartphone at an “effective price” of Rs 1,399, a move aimed at taking on Reliance Jio ahead of the festive season.  This is the first of multiple partnerships that the company is lining up with mobile handset manufacturers to bring such bundled 4G smartphone options to the market, Airtel said.
While Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio announced in July an Internet-enabled feature phone for a refundable deposit of Rs 1,500, Airtel said its partnership brings an “affordable” 4G smartphone to the market “effectively at the price of a feature phone”

Supreme Court  criminalises sexual intercourse with wife below 18 years

Sexual intercourse with a girl below 18 years of age, even by the husband, would now amount to rape, the Supreme Court held today in a historic verdict which criminalised sex with a wife who is not a major.
The apex court read down a provision in the Indian Penal Code of 1860 exempting males from being tried for rape if the wives were between the age of 15 and 18 years.  The top court also made clear that it had not “dealt with the larger issue of marital rape (sexual intercourse with wife without her consent) of adult women” as it was not raised before it.

How reviving 3 lakh cr worth of stranded projects will help homebuyers, banks and power growth

The Reserve Bank of India’s latest consumer confidence survey should be enough to give any government the blues. With 39% of the respondents having perceived a “worsening of the employment scenario” in H12017, compared with a year ago, consumer sentiment on the current employment situation has stayed subdued. The respondents also felt their income levels had, in fact, fallen over this period. Worse, their levels of optimism on future income continued to dip.

Apple, iPhone 8 Plus is the best till iPhone X comes along; smartphone is iPhone 7 upgrade with one design change

The Apple iPhone 8 Plus might have lost a bit of its thunder to the Apple iPhone X, but given that the former is already on sale, with the latter at least a month away, this is the top flagship phone for the Indian festival season. The Apple iPhone 8 series is an upgrade on the Apple iPhone 7 series, but has a new number because of the design change in the form of a glass back. But is there more to this phone? Well, here is our review.
