Expressing confidence that all parties are inclined towards progress of the nation, PM Narendra Modi said he expects important bills to be passed during Parliament’s monsoon session that begins today.
“We are completing 70 years of Independence. This session comes just ahead of August 15. I hope that we will take the nation to greater heights,” PM Modi said. “We all want the nation to progress at a fast pace. I have spoken to all parties, individually and together, the mood is right. Everyone wants to take decisions for the betterment of the nation. I expect good discussions to take place in the session,” he added.
Modi government is hopeful of getting the crucial GST (Goods and Services Tax) Bill passed during this session of the Parliament. The bill is stuck in Rajya Sabha, and Congress which has been opposing it on minor objections, may find itself isolated with most regional parties supporting GST.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Parliamentary Affairs minister Ananth Kumar last week met Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, hoping to build consensus on GST.
Ahead of the session, Congress has said that it will play the role of a ‘constructive’ opposition. All eyes are now on the government and its ability to bag support for a bill that will be a major economic reform.
