It is not every day that a person can surprise the Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac. When that person turns out to be Metro Man E Sreedharan, you can already sense that something great is happening.
Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac took to Facebook to express his respect and appreciation for ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan and elaborated on the latter’s visit to his office. The surprise factor for the Kerala Finance Minister is that E Sreedharan did not talk about Kochi Metro at all!
This is a rough translation of the Facebook post written in Malayalam by Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac:
“When Metro Man E Sreedharan visited my office after seeking an appointment first, I thought that his visit would be related to a discussion Light Metro but the crux of his discussion with me pertained to something very simple. He requested that the DMRC is entrusted with the approval to build classrooms in the LP School where he had studied. It is for this purpose that he visited me as the Finance Minister.
What amazes me about this great man is the remarkable commitment he demonstrated to the LP school where he studied. When Sreedharan had retired and moved to his hometown, the situation of his school was extremely dismal. Now there are over 300 children studying in the school and the old classrooms are no longer sufficient. So far, he has been paying out of his own pocket to make better improvements to the school building and for improving basic facilities. However, this time the expenses will be by the government and Sreedharan is keen to ensure that the expense are carefully and responsibly managed. That is why he was determined and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will take up the task of building the two classrooms in his school.
I salute E Sreedharan’s respect for the school where he studied. If each of us can demonstrate the same spirit towards the schools we grew up studying in, the education landscape itself would be transformed.”
In his own way, ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan continues to inspire and work towards nurturing the dreams of children by building classrooms in his old LP school. As Kerala Finance Minister stated in his Facebook post, there is an inspiring message for everyone to imbibe – to look back to our old schools and find ways to make it a better place to study for other children.
