MCD elections 2017: Ahead of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, hundreds of youth and women members of Delhi Congress met Rahul Gandhi to ensure ‘impartial’ distribution of tickets. They urged the party Vice-president to ensure that their ‘rights’ were not undermined during the ticket distribution process. According to the Indian Express, a list of 39 was handed over to Gandhi, in which tickets were requested to be handed over to those who have been working for the party for many years. Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress president Amit Malik told Indian Express that Rahul had told the state Youth Congress that MCD, being the lowest level of governance in the state, would be the right platform for the youth to contest. After meeting Rahul Gandhi, Malik told PTI that “I met Rahul Gandhi who assured that justice will be done to Youth Congress.”
He also added, “He is our leader. Last year we had met him and he had promised that Youth Congress will be ensured participation in MCD elections and we had gone to make a request to him in this regard.”
Delhi Mahila Congress president Barkha Singh too submitted a list of 90 members who have worked for the party for years. In her statement, Singh said, “The state unit leaders do not meet the women aspirants seeking party ticket for elections.” She also added that”I submitted a list of 90 women. We do not want tickets for all but they should be given at least some tickets, may be 30 or 20. These women workers work hard for the party and they want their due.” Though Barkha Singh and her members were not able to meet the Gandhi but they have submitted their list to teh party officials concerned.
Meanwhile, the first list of 100 Congress candidates is in the final stage or preparation and the announcement could be made soon.
