After three years’ wait, this week Lakhan Manoj of Jangaon district of Telangana convinced his sarpanch to dig a hole smack in the middle of National Highway 163 which connects Warangal and Hyderabad. The reason, in case you are wondering, is that according to Lakhan, Lord Shiva has been, for the last three years, asking the Jangaon resident to dig under a particular spot that falls under the highway to retrieve a Shivling, according to a Huffington Post report.

Manoj wanted to dig at the spot on Shiv Ratri but was unable to do so as he got no support for his undertaking. Manoj had to satisfy himself by performing religious rituals next to the spot on the highway where he thought the Shivling was located. Manoj claimed that every time he passed by the section of the road he would enter a trance-like state, NDTV reported.

Earlier this week Manoj with the help of locals was able to deploy earth-moving equipment and dig a big hole right in the middle of the national highway. Unfortunately, for Manoj, the police showed up just before he could reach the Shivling – he said. When the police arrived Manoj and his supporters had managed to dig a 15-foot deep trench when the police reached and stopped the digging, Huffington Post reported.

The police detained Manoj and a local leader who had collaborated in the effort. A police official from Jangaon said the highway has not been damaged too much. The policeman added that a case of illegal digging has been registered, although no one has been named in the FIR.
