The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked the centre to declare the birth anniversaries of leaders like Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose as national holidays. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee has demanded the Centre to declare a national holiday on the birthday of the two prominent faces from Bengal. Recently, Swami Vivekananda’s birthday was celebrated at various locations across India on January 12. The birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is celebrated on January 23.
Mamata Banerjee took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter and expressed her views. She wrote, “Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose are national and international icons. I have written a letter to the PM urging the GOI to declare both their birthdays (Jan 12 and Jan 23) national holidays.”
Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhash Chandra are two very famous personalities to have emerged from the state of West Bengal. Swami Vivekananda was an Indian Hindu monk and a disciple of Ramakrishna. Vivekananda was and still is regarded as a key figure who introduced the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. The other Indian national, whose birth anniversary should be turned into a national holiday as per the West Bengal chief minister is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Bose was an Indian nationalist who attempted to get rid of British rule in India. Bose is credited to have revamped the Indian National Army (INA).
Meanwhile, on the Election Commission’s recommendation for the disqualifications of the 20 AAP MLAs, the West Bengal chief Minister criticised the EC by saying that a constitutional body cannot be used for political vendetta. She said, “A constitutional body can’t be used for political vendetta.” In her post on Twitter, Mamata Banerjee extended a strong support to the Delhi Chief Minister and further wrote, “The 20 AAP MLAs were not even given a hearing by the Hon EC. Most unfortunate. This goes against the principles of natural justice.At this hour we are strongly with Arvind Kejriwal and his team.”
