West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was in the firing line of Twiterrati today for announcing Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of the soldiers from her state who lost their lives for the country in Sunday’s attack by four Pakistani terrorists in Uri, Kashmir. Enraged Twitterati dug out reports from September 2015 when Banerjee had announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the family of a pilgrim from the state, who had lost his life in Mecca crash incident, and Rs 1 lakh each of the rest of the 100 deceased.

Earlier, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had embarrassed the family of a Uri martyr from his state by announcing Rs 5 lakh compensation for his family. In Bihar, the government gives Rs 4 lakh to the family of someone who dies while getting treatment for liquor addiction. Nitish not only drew flak for his announcement, but even the martyr’s widow said: “Was my husband a drunkard who died in a drain?” Embarrassed, Kumar revised the compensation to Rs 11 lakh.

Today, Twitterati was annoyed with the announcement of the paltry sum by Banerjee. “Mamata gives 2 lakhs for Uri Attack martyrs. Same Mamata gave 10 lakhs for victims who were killed in Hajj accident. Long live secularism!” a user tweeted. Here are how they reacted:

In contrast, UP CM Akhilesh Yadav won praises from people and Twitterati alike for announcing Rs 20lakh compensation each for the families of Uri martyrs from his state. Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das had also announced Rs 10 lakh each compensation.
