The Maharashtra government today set up a cabinet-sub committee, as a follow up action of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ assurance given to the state legislature on the issue of Maratha reservations. The five-member committee will be headed by Revenue minister Chandrakant Patil, an official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) told PTI. The other members include two each from BJP and Shiv Sena, the official said. They are: Diwakar Raote and Eknath Shinde of Sena and Girish Mahajan and Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar of BJP, he added. On August 9, lakhs of members of the Maratha community, a powerful agrarian community, staged their 58th and final ‘muk morcha’ (silent protest) in Mumbai demanding reservation in jobs and educational institutions.

The same day, Fadnavis had announced in the state legislative assembly that the government would extend to the Maratha community the educational concessions that are currently given to the OBCs. He had also said the government would form a cabinet sub-committee, which would review the implementation of various schemes for the Maratha community and accordingly, the sub-committee has been announced today, the official said.
