Madhya Pradesh farmers protest: In response to the farmers’ protest, Madhya Pradesh Minister A Chitnis on Wednesday said that the CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan led government will start a Krishi Rin Samadhan Yojana, where the interest rate on loans would be lesser and would help default-hit farmers access credit. She also told ANI that the Cabinet had approved Rs 1000 crore for the ‘Krishi Mulya Sthirikaran Kosh’. Earlier, the farmers of the state had taken a cue from their counterparts in Maharashtra and hit the streets protesting over demands for remunerative prices for their crops and over the fact that the govt was not clearing a farm loan waiver. The protests took an ugly turn on Tuesday when 6 farmers were killed and 8 others injured in two separate incidents of firing. The farmers have alleged that it was the police that had fired at them. A judicial probe has been ordered into the matter.

Internet services meanwhile had been suspended in Mandsaur, Ratlam and Ujjain following the protests and a curfew has been imposed. The farmers have also been demanding that they ought to be given Rs 50 per litre of milk they sell as they have to spend Rs 37 per litre. According to ANI, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had apprised BJP President Amit Shah about the situation in Mandsaur over a telephonic conversation.

According to India Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a meeting to discuss the violence in the region, in the presence of top leaders such as Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh. Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath, meanwhile demanded the resignation of the MP CM, saying that it was his responsibility and it would be unjustified to shift the blame on any police officer. Earlier on Tuesday, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi had gone on Twitter and said that the government was at war with the farmers of the country.
