A suspected terrorist who was believed to be a part of the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was killed on Wednesday after a 12-hour long stand-off operation in Lucknow.

A suspected terrorist who was believed to be a part of the terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was killed on Wednesday after a 12-hour long stand-off operation in Lucknow. It all started with the report of a terrorist hiding in a house in Haji Ali colony in Thakurganj, located on the outskirts of Lucknow. The terrorist was suspected to be an active member of ISIS and was involved in Ujjain Express blast that injured ten people on Tuesday morning. However, after hours long encounter between the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terror Squad and the terrorist, the later was killed and body of the suspect was recovered. As per a report by The Indian Express, the suspect opened fire at security personnel who were combing the area after receiving a tip-off about the presence of a few suspected terrorists.

The killed terrorist has been identified as Saifullah. He was holed up inside a building in the area. Civilians residing nearby were evacuated from the spot soon after the incident was reported. Commenting upon the development so far, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Daljit Chaudhary said, “After opening the doors of the house (where the terrorist was holed up), the force went inside and found the suspect dead along with weapons.” The IG ATS Aseem Arun confirmed that the slain terror suspect was an active member of the ISIS.

Here are 5 major developments that has happened in this incident so far:

i. Around 9 am on March 7, a blast takes place in one of the compartments of Bhopal-Ujjain Express train near Bhopal where ten people where injured. At around 1.30 pm, a bus was intercepted near Pipariya in Madhya Pradesh’s Hoshangabad district in east of Bhopal where three people were detained in connection with the morning’s train blast. Later in the evening, UP Police carried out raids and arrested two men in Kanpur and one from Etawah. The third raid was targeted at the Thakuganj venue where the ISIS terrorist was hiding out.

ii. Later in the evening, the suspected terrorist was holed up in a house in Haji Ali colony in Thakurganj, located on the outskirts of Lucknow. Soon the UP ATS team reached the spot and started using initial measures such as the use of tear gas to draw out the suspect. Hours later, report of two militants holed up in the house were given by the ATS which later turned out to be a confusion due to blurred visuals from the tube camera. The ATS team then asked the militant to surrender or else officers will start with tactical operations to nab him.

iii. The suspected terrorist was later killed during the encounter with UP ATS. His body was lying on the floor. Weapons and body was visible from hole which was made by the ATS team. IG ATS Aseem Arun said that cops tried to flush out terrorist Saifullah with chilli bombs but when they tried to enter the militant fired and the armed forces responded.

iv. Later, speaking with ANI, father of the slain terrorist said, “This was not in country’s interest. We will not accept the body of an anti-national.” Two and half months back he left home after I beat him up for not working. He called last Monday saying he’s going to Saudi, his father added further.

v. Later addressing a press conference in Uttar Pradesh today, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Daljit Chaudhary said that near about 8 pistols, 630 cartridges, bomb-making instruments,pellets, timers and wires were recovered from the house in Haji Ali colony in Thakurganj where the terrorists were holed up. He also informed that 45 grams gold and foreign currency also recovered by the ATS team. The killed militant was self- radicalised and no such evidence yet of any ISIS link has been found so far, said Chaudhary.
