Congress on Sunday appointed party secretary Asha Kumari as the AICC incharge of Punjab in place of Kamal Nath, who had resigned following an uproar by BJP, SAD and AAP over his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Following her appointment, AAP slammed the decision saying the party was not serious about getting rid of corruption in the state.
Kumari was convicted on February 26 in the land grab case by a Chamba court and sentenced to one year imprisonment, besides being fined Rs 8,000. The court had held her guilty of criminal conspiracy. On March 19, the Himachal Pradesh High Court suspended the one-year sentence.
2:10 pm: I am certain that with people like Ambika Soni and Amrinder Sigh ji, Punjab has no dearth of leaders or workers, says Kumari.
2:06 pm: AAP is not going to decide who is going to lead from Congress in the state: Asha Kumari
1:37 pm: There is nothing such as personal corruption. Corruption is corruption, affirms Patra.
1:34 pm: She is out on bail, she hasn’t been acquitted by the court. This is a case of bankruptcy of leaders within the Congress: Sambit Patra.
1:32 pm: BJP is scared of us. It is a personal property dispute. BJP has no agenda on its list, why is it interfering in our internal matters? asks Asha Kumari.
12:58 pm: Asha Kumari will bring nirasha in Punjab, says Sanjay Singh, AAP
12:33 pm: Asha Kumari is out on bail for land grabbing case and so are Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi for the National Herald case. Both national and state leaders of Congress are out on bail, says Sambit Patra.
11:45 am: BJP is free to allege what they like but it is not the truth: Congress’s newly appointed Punjab incharge Asha Kumari
11:42 am: This is an internal matter and prerogative of the Congress president to choose whosoever she wants, says Pratap Singh Bajwa, Congress.
11:20 am: Congress has nothing to offer and is beating around criminality in case of 1984 riots & corruption in case of Asha Kumari, says BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra. This shows the dearth and bankruptcy of leadership in Congress. added Patra.
11:18 am: “By appointing Asha Kumari as Punjab incharge, Congress party has proved they are not serious about getting rid of corruption in the state. She was convicted by Chamba (Himachal Pradesh) court and awarded one-year jail in a 60-acre land grabbing case. After tainted Kamal Nath, her appointment shows Congress is short of clean leaders,” AAP’s Rajouri Garden MLA Jarnail Singh said.
11:10 am: Through the appointment of Kumari, Congress is signalling to the fact that it doesn’t have clean faces: Vineet Joshi, BJP
An AICC secretary and four-time MLA, Kumari was facing trial in the case for over a decade along with six other persons.
Punjab BJP leader Vineet Joshi said the appointment was “unfortunate and disgusting”.
“First it was Kamal Nath and now Asha Kumari, who has been sentenced 1-year jail by court in a case of land grab that too recently. I think they don’t have good leaders,” he said.
Saying the Congress “does not have clean faces”, Punjab BJP chief Vijay Sampla added, “First, they appointed Kamal Nath, a man facing allegations in the 1984 anti-Sikh carnage. Now Asha Kumari, a land grabber, has been made in-charge of Congress affairs in Punjab.”
Nath had relinquished on June 15 the charge of Punjab after BJP, SAD and AAP stepped up their attack on the party over the appointment.
