Prime Minister Narendra Modi today lashed out at Congress for criticising the central government over demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency. Invoking former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary, PM Modi said, “people of Nehru family falsely accused me but I am here to fulfill what was left incomplete from your time”. Speaking at a rally in Ghazipur of Uttar Pradesh where assembly elections are scheduled to be held in 2017, the PM said “Congress says people are facing inconvenience but you have imposed emergency for 19 months. You turned the country into a prison for 19 months.” This was his first public address after the central government today decided to grant exemption to “certain category of transactions” where old series of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes can be accepted. Noting that fake currency is the main source of income for extremists and Naxalites, the PM said, “our enemy is printing counterfeit notes across the border. Enemy is flooding our nation with these counterfeit notes. We need to put an end to this”. He flagged off new Shabd Bhedi Express Train between Ghazipur-Kolkata. Taking a dig at Congress, he said “it (Congress) also demonetised the 25 paise coin without asking anyone. They did something of their stature, I did of mine”.

Here are key points

There is no shortage of wealth in India. My decision is a little harsh. When I was young, poor people used to ask for ‘kadak’ (strong) tea but it spoils the mood of rich.

Yes, those against me are strong people. But, I will not be scared of them. I will not leave the path of truth and integrity.

I will never let anyone loot the money that belongs to the poor of the country.

Congress also demonetised the 25 paise coin without asking anyone. They did something of their stature, I did of mine.

I am assuring people that their money won’t go to waste.

Some people never say anything in your face, but behind your back they poke other people to oppose and go against you.

Congress says people are facing inconvenience but you have imposed emergency for 19 months. You turned the country into a prison for 19 months.

Will you bear pain for few days? PM asks crowd.

NDA government is for the poor, it is for the farmers and it is for rural India.

I will finish projects on time. Your hardship wont’t go in vain.

PM Narendra Modi invoked former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, says I have chosen November 14 for a particular reason. People of Nehru family falsely accused me but I am here to fulfill what was left incomplete from your time.

Uttar Pradesh has given many PMs to the country. I am the ninth prime minister from the state.

Your verdict helps me to launch the fight against corruption.

In 2014 I had asked you to trust me. It’s because of people of Uttar Pradesh that poor are sleeping peacefully.

I salute this land (Ghazipur) which gave birth to Vir Abdul Hamid who taught Pakistan a lesson in 1965 war.
