While atrocities towards Dalits sparked a debate in both Houses on Wednesday, Dayashankar Singh’s sexist comment against Mayawati fanned the fire even more. Soon after Singh’s comments, he was removed from his post and later suspended from BJP. The controversy against BJP Uttar Pradesh VP comes at a time when the party was already battling the Opposition parties over the violence against Dalits in Gujarat.
On Wednesday, a senior BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh started a major row by making derogatory remarks against BSP Chief Mayawati that drew severe criticism from parties while an embarrassed BJP expressed regret but furore over the issue hasn’t died till now.
Gujarat continues to boil over the assaults on Dalits, while anger over the derogatory remarks on Dalit leader Mayawati is no less. Here is a LIVE coverage of how events are unfolding in both the scenarios.

08.30 am: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi to visit Una (Gujarat) today to meet the victims.
BJP state President Keshav Prasad Maurya sacked Dayashankar Singh from the party soon after he announced that Singh had been relieved from all organisational responsibilities.
Expulsion from the party will remain in force for six years in line with the party’s rules, BJP sources said. Singh’s remarks drew severe flak from members in Rajya Sabha, including women MPs, with Deputy Chairperson P J Kurien saying that the House wants the government to ensure that stringent action is taken against the BJP leader, as per law, for his “unforgivable” comments.
On July 11, some persons who claimed to be ‘Gau-Rakshak’ (‘cow protectors’) arrived at Mota Samadhiyala and beat up seven Dalit youths who were allegedly skinning a dead cow. The attackers alleged that the Dalits had slaughtered the cow. Soon after the incident, different parts of the state started protesting against the assaults on Dalit community, which also led to the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha twice on Wednesday.
