In a shocking incident, Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz was abducted and shot dead by militants in Kashmir’s Shopian district, according to PTI report. It has been learned that the army officer was abducted by five to six terrorists from his relative’s house. His bullet riddled body was found in Harmain area in the district this morning, the report says. In recent past, terrorists have attacked security men, politicians in the Valley. Both the state government and the Centre have reviewed the situation. This incident will only raise concern of the administration about the prevailing situation in the Valley. “In a dastardly act, some unidentified terrorists yesterday abducted and then killed a young Army officer, Lt Ummer Fayaz,” an army official said. “The Army salutes the braveheart and stands by the bereaved family in this hour of tragedy,” the official was quoted as saying by PTI. The official added, “we are committed to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act of terror to justice”.
Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz was in the Infantry with the Rajputana Rifles and was posted in Akhnoor area in Jammu.

He was commissioned in the Army in December last year.
The 23-year-old hailed from Kulgam district.
Fayaz, who was unarmed, had come to his native Kulgam district on leave to attend a wedding ceremony in his family, the army official said.
Fayaz, had passed out of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and was scheduled to go for a ‘Young Officers Course’ in September.
He was part of the hockey team, a report says. Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has said Fayaz was an ‘exceptional sportsman.’
“He was part of the Hockey Team of NDA, excellent volleyball player. He was physically tough and the troops enjoyed being with him,” the Army said.
The postmortem was carried out at the District Hospital in Shopian and his mortal remains will be brought to Sursun for burial with full military honors.
Meanwhile, Fayaz’s killing has evoked strong response from the Narendra Modi government. Terming it as a “dastardly act of cowardice”, Jaitley said “This young officer from Jammu and Kashmir was a role model.” “We share the grief of family of Lt. Ummer Fayaz & stand in solidarity. Lt. Ummer Fayaz will continue to inspire youth from the Valley,” Jaitley tweeted. Jaitley also said, “Lt. Ummer Fayaz of 2RAJRIF was an exceptional sportsman, his sacrifice reiterates nation’s commitment to eliminate terrorism from the Valley.”
Minister of State (Home) Hansraj Ahir condemned the death of Fayaz saying, “Let’s see what comes out in the investigation. They will get a befitting reply.”
