Lalu Yadav speaks to Sonia Gandhi, Mayawati: On agenda, Presidential elections, anti-BJP rally

Sonia Gandhi and Lalu Prasad discussed upcoming Presidential elections and the current political situation. Sonia Gandhi called Lalu Prasad a day after the Income Tax department raided 22 properties linked to the RJD supremo and his family.

Sources have told ANI that Congress President Sonia Gandhi had a telephonic conversation with RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. Gandhi and Lalu Prasad discussed upcoming Presidential elections and the current political situation. Sonia Gandhi called Lalu Prasad a day after the Income Tax department raided 22 properties linked to the RJD supremo and his family.

Sources have told ANI that, Lalu also spoke to BSP Chief Mayawati and requested her to attend a political rally in Patna on August 27. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accepted Lalu’s invitation to attend a rally of political parties which are opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party, according to the Indian Express. Lalu will hold ‘BJP Hatao, Desh Bachao’ rally on August 27.

Earlier this month Mamata Banerjee met Sonia Gandhi at her residence, but denied that candidates for the presidential elections were discussed, as per an Indian Express report. Mamata after meeting Sonia Gandhi said ”Did not discuss any names for the post of President, but we did discuss important matters related to politics and presidential elections,” according to The Indian Express.

It was also reported that with the YSR Congress and AIADMK siding with NDA, the chances of BJP’s candidate winning the presidential election have increased. Congress is still tight-lipped over Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recommendation of giving President Pranab Mukherjee a second term in office.
Congress leader Randeep Surjewala told the Indian Express that ”Sonia Gandhi and Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will discuss the issue of presidential elections with various people including leaders of other parties and will try to build a consensus.”
