Former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP and Lalu Prasad Yadav’s aide Prabhunath Singh was sentenced to life by a court in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district today in a 22-year-old murder case. Prabhunath Singh along with his two brothers were held guilty for killing the then Janata Dal MLA Ashoke Singh in the year 1995. According to an India Today report, the three were held guilty by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Surendra Sharma after which they were taken into custody and sent to the Hazaribagh central jail. Ashoke Singh was a Janata Dal MLA of Masrakh in Bihar’s Chapra district, he was killed at his residence in an attack that involved the use of bombs and firing by the three convicts on July 3, 1995. The case was registered against the convicts on the basis on a statement that was recorded by Ashoke Singh widow, Chandni Devi.

After the announcement of the the punishment, Chandni Devi, expressed her happiness and said, “Justice has prevailed.” She further added, “We have fought against the entire system for years. Prabhunath Singh tried to buy us off. He also put pressure on me, threatened me but money doesn’t work every time,” as quoted by News 18.
Prabhunath Singh was convicted in the 1995 murder case on May 18, 2017 while his punishment was announced today. According to an Indian Express report, Prabhunath Singh along with his brothers, Dinath Singh and Ritesh Singh (a former mukhiya) have all been sentenced to life imprisonment. Prior to the 1995 attack in which Ashoke Singh lost his life, he was lucky to have escaped an attack in the year 1991.
