Kurdish forces backed by US-led airstrikes have captured a key military base from Islamic State (IS) militants in northern Syria in the group’s self-declared capital of Raqqa.

According to BBC, the Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) was backed by other rebel groups along with US-led airstrikes.

The move by Kurdish forces comes a week after they seized a Syrian border crossing with Turkey from the militants.

Kurdish forces now have complete control of the Liwa (Brigade) 93 base that lies in IS-held territory, said a Kurdish spokesman.

He added that IS militants have been “defeated”.

Godbless the Kurdish people! We should be giving them more support as they stand for many of the values we hold dear; religious tolerance, women's rights (human in general), democracy etc. They also seem to be one of the few groups that is bent on destroying the cancer that is Isis. If anything good will come of all this we will see a free and independent Kurdish state when all is said and done.
