Women security concerns have been raised time and again but the fire refuses to cool off. Women are still living a life on the edge in the country and the innumerable incidents that keep making headlines are just one more reason to consider the gravity of the situation. While the national capital is often hit at for being most unsafe for women, a recent incident from Kolkata has sent the nation into shock.

On Saturday, a Psychology student in Kolkata was cornered by pimps, who tried to take her forcibly in their notoriety. However the alert mindedness and bravery of a Traffic Police constable saved the girl on time.

It so happened that troubled by personal issues at home, the girl left for Kolkata in the morning and reached Esplanade. After wandering around for the whole day, in the evening she started walking towards her college area where she was attacked by the pimps. The girl called out for help, which was luckily heard by Ranabir Das, traffic Police serjeant who was manning the Sonagachhi area for drunk drivers. Sonagachhi in Kolkata is a known red light area, hence when Das heqard the cries, he rushed to the spot smelling trouble.

He rushed to the dim light lane and took out his revolvers to petrify the pimps. This worked as the girl was freed from their clasps before they ran away. The brave constable helped her calm down before taking her to a nearby Police station. Meanwhile, the girl’s kins had already filed a missing complaint for her at the Ghola police station. They were immediately called to pick up their daughter.

While Kolkata Police and the nation is proud of the act of valiance Ranabir Das showed, the incident is still a chilling one. It raises questions on the sensitive chord yet again.
