When was the last time you heard about touching the sky with feet on the ground? Something similar happened when Imtiaz Momin and his brother Yusuf repaired an ailing chopper engine and made it fly. The two brothers are Kolhapur based car mechanic and the story has been making buzz around the netizens.

The brothers own a small garage by the name Mistry Maharashtra in Kasba Bawda area of Kolhapur. Nearby lives Sanjay Patil, Chairman of the Dr. D. Y. Patil Education Group. It so happened that last Friday evening some visitors came to meet Patil in a chopper and by the time of their departure the chopper refused to start.

Seeing no other option Patil called on the Momin brothers who were able to locate the ailment after a close inspection. Simply put it was an electrical fault which had cut off the power supply to the main engine thereby preventing the chopper to take off. Though he fixed the issue but later on the pilot landed in trouble.

“On October 12, an Agusta Westland AW 109 chopper (VT-VCA) was on a flight from Goa to Pune via Kolhapur. Our Mumbai office got information and pictures that at the Kolhapur stopover, a car mechanic did ‘something’ with the helicopter’s engine. He may have possibly inspected the engine to try rectify a snag,” said a senior DGCA official.

Only qualified AMEs are supposed to inspect and repair aircraft or chopper engines.
