In his interview to Mathrubhumi newspaper dated June 15, 2017, Dr. E Sreedharan, who is popularly referred to as ‘Metro Man’, opened up about the completion of the Kochi Metro which is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 17, 2017. He also spoke about the challenges faced during its implementation in Phase 1 and the support of the people despite the difficulties they faced during the implementation of the Kochi Metro. “I feel very happy and proud that I can now travel alongside my state’s dream, which has now come true,” Dr. E. Sreedharan told Mathrubhumi.
It had been reported yesterday by TV channels that ‘Metro Man’ Dr. E Sreedharan’s name had been removed from the list of dignitaries who will share the dais at the inaugural ceremony of the Kochi Metro on June 17. Following this report, CM Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting an official go-ahead for Dr. E Sreedharan to be included in the list, along with Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, as per local TV reports.
When asked about his exclusion from the dais, E Sreedharan said, “No need to raise controversy over this issue. The Prime Minister’s security is more important. I am not at all hurt.”
“I am very happy with the first phase of the Kochi Metro’s implementation and the only sliver of sadness I have is that I could not keep my word to the people. I told people that the first phase would be completed within three years but it took four years. Kochi is a city with very narrow roads. To build on any side, you have to block one side of the road which causes long traffic jams and inconveniences for commuters but the people of Kochi co-operated fully. I am disappointed that we could not complete the first phase in three years,” Dr. E. Sreedharan further stated.
