Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kochi Metro today and boarded the Palarivattom metro station along with Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Justice P Sathasivam, Dr E Sreedharan. Proceeding to the Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delighted Malayalis by addressing them first in Malayalam, “Ente sahodari sahodaranmaarey, ee ulgadana chadangil pangucherunathil, janangaldey oppam njaan santhoshikunnu abhimaanikukaayum cheyunnu” which means “My dear sisters and brothers, I join your happiness and take pride in Kochi Metro’s inauguration today.”
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in Malayalam, there were loud cheers from the audience comprising of over 3500 people in the stadium. He congratulated the people of Kochi and CM Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the Kochi Metro inauguration.
“Kochi, the Queen of the Arabian Sea had once been an important spice trading centre and today it is known as the commercial capital of Kerala. Kochi Metro Rail Limited is a 50:50 joint venture of the government of India and the government of Kerala. Centre has so far released over Rs2000 crore for #KochiMetro project,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
He also stated, “Kochi Metro coaches reflect the ‘Make in India’ vision. They have been built by Alstom near Chennai and have an Indian component of around 70%. We need to bring about a paradigm shift in urban planning with a people-centric approach.”

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said,” I can see that Kochi Metro is a celebration for the people of Kerala; I am very happy to be here.This is the fastest Metro completed in record time.”
Addressing the gathering in the welcome address at the Kaloor Stadium, George Elias, Managing Director, KMLR praised the hard work and vision that made the Kochi Metro a reality for the people. He praised Dr E. Sreedharan as ‘an inspiration for all Indians’ and thanked CM Pinarayi Vijayan for being the Chief-in-Charge of the Kochi Metro project. He also mentioned that all political parties had supported the Kochi Metro and thanked Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala for the co-operation extended.
