Kashmir: Separatist leader Nayeem Khan has been detained by authorities at Srinagar airport today it has been revealed. The detention was carried out to stop his visit to Delhi where he was expected to attend an event at the Pakistan High Commission on Thursday to celebrate Pakistan Day. The authorities have not clarified exactly when Khan will be released or if the detention will be turned into an arrest.

The arrest comes just a day after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed her faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ability to take bold steps to resolve the issues that are plaguing the state. She said, “If there is any leader who can talk to Pakistan it is him (Modi). Manmohan singh was the Prime Minister for 10 years. He had a wish to visit the other side (Pakistan) as he was born there and wanted to see his ancestral home. But he could not muster courage.”

The reason behind it she explained was the fact that Modi went to Lahore in December 2015 on the wedding of Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s kin. She added, that despite the Pathankot and Uri attacks on Indian forces, “If there is anyone with the mandate to heal the wounds of people of Jammu and Kashmir, take the state out of the morass, start dialogue with Pakistan and make the atmosphere conducive, it is only Narendra Modiji and no one else.” Mehbooba was talking to PDP workers in Anantnag while campaigning for her brother Mufti Tassaduq Hussain. He is the party’s candidate for the Anantnag Lok Sabha bypoll, which Mehbooba had vacated in 2016 after her election to the Legislative Assembly. Mehbooba runs a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir along with ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has been allocated the deputy chief minister’s post.
