Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi will visit Kashmir Valley day after the body of Army officer Lt Ummer Fayaz was found in Shopian. Lt Fayaz, who was commissioned into the 2 Rajputana Rifles in December last year was in Sopore for a cousin’s wedding when he was abducted and killed by terrorists. Sources in the government have told Indian Express that the decision to send the Home Secretary was taken at the highest level of government. The Indian Express has also learned that the Mehrishi will meet J&K Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Mehrishi is also expected to meet senior officers from the Army, police and central paramilitary forces.

The Indian Express has learned that the Army has assured the officer’s family that the ”perpetrators of the heinous crime and dastardly act will not be spared”.On Wednesday, Defence Minister Jaitley had described Lt Fayaz in glowing terms and called his killing a ‘dastardly act of cowardice’.
Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, Colonel of the Rajputana Rifles and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of South Western Command, says Lt Fayaz’s killing “marks a watershed moment in Kashmir Valley and people of Kashmir will decisively turn the tide against terrorism”.
Indian Express reports that former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has condemned the incident. Omar also added that the situation in the state is ‘sad and alarming’ and needs urgent attention from Centre. Lt Fayaz who was on his first leave after joining the Army was supposed to return to his unit in Akhnoor, Jammu on May 25.
