Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Jaitley was appraised of measures to strengthen counter infiltration grid along the LoC, news agency Press Trust of India reported. The defence minister impressed upon commanders to maintain strict vigil along LoC and remain prepared to give befitting reply to any misadventures from across the border.
Jaitley, who also holds the finance ministry portfolio, arrived in Jammu and Kashmir this evening and soon after chaired the security review meeting which was also attended by newly-appointed Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra and Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat, PTI reported Army officials as saying.
“Jaitley lauded the valour, sacrifice and patriotic fervour of every soldier who is serving in these challenging situations for national integrity”, PTI reported an official as saying. The defence minister further urged all soldiers to continue the good job being done and ensure the safety of the innocent people while dealing firmly with the inimical elements.
The visit comes in the days after the beheading of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani Army in Poonch district which was termed “barbaric” by India. The state has seen a spree in infiltration attempts, ceasefire violation, cross-border shelling along with the Valley’s, giving the state government a tough task to handle.
After the attack, Jaitley had slammed Pakistan for its denial of role in mutilation of Indian soldiers at LOC. Slamming Pakistan, Jaitley said that “denial itself carries no credibility.” The Defence Minister added that the act could not have taken place without backing of the Pakistan Army. “This can’t happen without protection/participation/actual indulgence of the Army (Pak Army) itself,” Jaitley said. He further asked people to have faith on Army.
