Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday inaugurated a Metro rail project in the industrial city of Kanpur. Laying the foundation stone for the R13,721-crore
ambitious project, the chief minister said this will be the fourth Metro project in UP after Noida, Ghaziabad and Lucknow, and more will follow in Varanasi, Allahabad and Agra.
The foundation-laying ceremony was held in the presence of Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu and BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.
The Kanpur Metro is a joint project by the central and state governments for which the Narendra Modi government has allocated R50 crore.
Akhilesh had made a provision of R50 crore for the Kanpur Metro project in the 2016-17 state Budget. “We will not let Kanpur lag behind in development. The Samajwadi Party government will ensure that Kanpur gets its due and becomes a smart city,” Akhilesh said, adding that the Metro is highly needed to beat the many woes that afflict the city.
