The Supreme Court, while continuing to hear the contempt petition against Justice CS Karnan, held him guilty of contempt and has sentenced CS Karnan to six months imprisonment. Last week, Justice Karnan had refused to be examined by a team of psychiatric doctors from Kolkata, stating categorically that he is normal and that he has a stable mind. The doctors left without examining him.

Justice CS Karnan’s check-up had been directed by a seven-member Supreme Court bench, which was headed by Chief Justice of India CJI JS Khehar and the order regarding the same was passed on May 1. Thereafter, the doctors from the Calcutta Pavlov Hospital for Mental Patient visited Justice CS Karnan’s residence and they were accompanied by police. However, they did not speak to the media afterwards.

    1. Justice Karnan case has underscored the fact that appointment of High Court judges is no easy job. 2. Though it was thought earlier that once the matter is in the Supreme Court, Justice Karnan’s case will be quickly disposed off, that has not happened. But hopefully after this decision to send him to jail for six months, ‘drama’ surrounding Justice Karnan’s wayward conduct will come to an end. 3. This unhappy series of incidents involving a sitting High Court judge underscore the fact that there is urgent need to have in place a process for trial (and if necessary removal) of errant judges of High Courts and even the Supreme Court.

The SC is indulging in a Comedy of Errors ! By just giving six months simple imprsonment to Karnan for contempt is a joke....this fellow has been hauled up for corruption, which has been proved, otherwise these judges stick together like doctors thru thick and thin and would NEVER have taken up the issue even if they were in the slighest doubt as to Karnan's duplicity ! Justice will be best served if Karnan is tried as an ordinary criminal...let India also know our Judiciary at times can rise to the levels of Vikramaditya the Just.
