JNU issue: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who are facing sedition charges for allegedly raising “anti-India” slogans, have surrendered before police, sources said.

Both surrendered outside the west gate of JNU on Tuesday, sources said.

“Comrade Umar and Comrade Anirban have surrendered themselves to police. It’s a moment of sadness for the campus because we have seen these activists for years standing with the students,” Shehla Rashid, vice president of JNU Students Union (JNUSU) said in a statement.

“They have placed their faith in the law and we hope that they will be released soon. We also hope that Comrade Kanhaiya gets bail tomorrow,” she said.

A case against Khalid and Bhattacharya was registered at Vasant Kunj police station.

According to the police sources, both have been taken to an undisclosed location. Both the students were accompanied by their lawyers and the representatives of JNU teachers association.

After the surrender of the students, their supporters gathered at Sabarmati Dhaba in the campus.

These poor students have to surrender. What a pity. These are DEDICATED AND INTELLIGENT WORKERS DOING RESEARCH FOR OPPRESSED AND DOWNTRODDEN. They had joined JNU definitely not for study. But to carry on struggle for downtrodden. However they are surprised that in India no one is poor. The carpenter, electrician, the Jamadar and the house hold kamwaali also have enough money to feed themselves and buy the essentials. But these JNU innocent students did not realise. Now they still want to fight for downtrodden as they donot have any skill other than shouting ant India slogans. These poor chaps were simply shouting anti national slogan because they can't do anything else. They do understand that to get a job you need to work hard. But they enjoys shouting. This is their skill. So what is wrong if they shout anti India slogans. These students are innocent. They have been simply lured by easy money from anti national forces. The only crime of these students is they donot want to study but want to spent time in shouting. They have been occupying the hostels free of cost and also getting free lunches. They just got some foreign funding to collect data showing India in poor light. They are also collecting lot of data for showing that India has not progressed and it has world's largest poverty ridden people. They will publish the report containing lot of data showing India in poor light.

Most stringent laws should be applied against them. NIA should do thorough investigation of the w issue including links with foreign groups other anti national organization. The National Security cannot be compromised.
