A grenade attack on the police was reported in the Kakapora area in Phulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. So far no casualties have been reported. No terrorist organisation has yet claimed responsibility of the attack and further information on the incident is awaited. The grenade attack on the police comes just a day after three jawans and a woman were killed in an ambush in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. The soldiers were attacked when they were going for a cordon and search operation in Chittagam area of Shopian.
According to a recent report, the Indian Army lost 26 soldiers in the line of duty in Jammu and Kashmir in the first two months of 2017. The security forces have also stepped up the heat against militants killing 22 of them within 50 days. While 20 army personnel lost their lives to an avalanche in the valley, six were killed in the counter-insurgency.
On February 14 an officer of the major rank was martyred while battling militants in Handwara area of Kupwara district. Three militants were killed in the operation. Earlier that day too three soldiers had lost their lives in the gun battle in Hajin area of Bandipora district while one militant was killed, officials said.

The valley has witnessed a series of disturbances soon after the death of the Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. According to the intelligence report, approximately 100 youths have joined a terrorist organisation after the death of Burhan Wani which had erupted a series of violent protests in the valley.
According to the officials, out of the nearly 50 operations conducted in Kashmir since January 1 this year, 16 operations have resulted in either killing (22) or arrest (three) of militants.
