Jayalalithaa passes away: Greatness of the iconic leader and actress ruled the people’s heart. The death of charasmatic politician is mourned by the entire nation. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, popularly known as ‘Amma’, literally ruled the hearts of people till she breathed her last. J Jayalalithaa had a successful acting career and she had accumulated immense riches during her time. But if we look at her career in politics, as a Chief Minister, she only drew Re 1 as salary. Jaya refused to accept her first salary cheque as Chief Minister by saying that she had “abundant source of income and she does not need a salary”. And that actually true, as AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa declared assets worth Rs 113.73 crore as on April 2015, which was Rs.3.40 crore less than what she had declared the previous year, as per Zee media’s report. She left behind a huge political legacy after her death that included Rs 113.73 crore as movable and immovable assets and vehicles of worth Rs 42,25,000.

But when told that being a public servant she should receive a salary, she accepted a token salary of Re 1 per annum and this decision made her even more popular among the masses. Another reason why Amma became so popular is her role in anti-poverty measures. She started the immensely popular Amma Canteens where food was mostly subsided, along with Amma brand subsidy-oriented schemes like Amma Mineral Water, Amma cement and Amma salt.

Jayalalithaa also expanded her populist portfolio during elections, she gave away free mobile phones and 50 per cent subsidy for women to buy two-wheelers. She promised and doled out freebies galore, insisting that the populist schemes were aimed only at helping the lower rung masses. And to top it all, she was a charismatic personality, a successful actor and was linked to the iconic MGR.
