Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid floral tributes to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minster Jayalalithaa who passed away on Monday following a cardiac arrest. Other top politicians, including President Pranab Mukherjee, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will visit the venue to pay homage shortly. Earlier, cine stars and politicians including Rajnikanth reached the venue and paid floral tribute to the leader. PM Narendra Modi, soon after the Amma’s demise, paid tribute to the leader via tweet message. “Deeply saddened at the passing away of Selvi Jayalalithaa. Her demise has left a huge void in Indian politics,” PM said in a series of Tweets.”Jayalalithaa ji’s connect with citizens, concern for welfare of the poor, the women & marginalized will always be a source of inspiration,” He added. “My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of grief. May the Almighty grant them the strength to bear this irreparable loss with courage and fortitude. I will always cherish the innumerable occasions when I had the opportunity to interact with Jayalalithaa ji. May her soul rest in peace.” said the PM.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that President Pranab Mukherjee had to return to New Delhi due to a technical snag in IAF Aircraft carrying him. Amma’s last rites are scheduled to be performed at Chennai’s Marina Beach at 4.30 pm today. She will be cremated next to the memorial site of her mentor and former chief minister MG Ramachandran. A seven day mournning has been declared in Tamil Nadu. While the Centre has also declared a mourning of three days. The neighbouring union territory of Puducherry has also announced a holiday for all government offices and educational institutions tomorrow. Flags were flown half-past at President House, several other government institutuions this morning.
