Jayalalithaa death: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away at Apollo Hospital at 11:30 pm on Monday after suffering cardiac arrest on Sunday evening. Former AIADMK chief, who was 68 years of age, had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since September 22 where she was admitted after complaining of fever and dehydration. Jayalalithaa was treated at Apollo Hospital for acute lung infection and was moved from the critical care unit of the hospital to a private room fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, but none of the modern medical marvels and some of the best doctors in the world, both Indian and foreign, were not able to save ‘Amma’. Now that she has passed away, she leaves behind a huge political legacy that is likely to be fought over by her close followers. Jaya was also quite wealthy, she had a hugely successful acting career, and as such she had accumulated immense riches. Here is a look at her assets:
AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa declared assets worth Rs 113.73 crore as on April 2015. This was Rs.3.40 crore less than what she had declared the previous year.
To start with movable and immovable assets, according to the affidavit filed by her to contest from Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency, Jayalalithaa had total of Rs 113.73 crore as movable and immovable assets, of which movable assets were valued at Rs 41.63 crore and immovable properties valued Rs 72.09 crore. Jayalalithaa had Rs 41,000 cash in hand at that time, however, she also listed Rs 2.04 crore as liabilities and wrote agriculture in the profession-occupation column in the form.
If Jayalalithaa’s investment in companies is to be considered, she said “various deposits and shares with companies have been seized by the police and with the custody of the court in case relating to Spl.C.C.No.208 of 2004 on the file of 36th Additional City Civil and Sessions Court, (Special Court) Bengaluru.” The reference is with regard to the disproportionate assets case against her.
In disclosure of residence, property and commercial buildings, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa, along with her mother, bought property for Rs 1.32 lakh in 1967 and her residence in upscale Poes Garden ‘Veda Nilayam’ is spread over 24,000 square feet with a built up area of 21,662 square feet is worth Rs 43.96 crore. With that she also owned 14.50 acres of farm land in Jeedimetla village in Ranga Reddy district in Telangana and 3.43 acres in Cheyyur Village in Kancheepuram village in Tamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa had also purchased the property in Telangana in 1968 along with her mother Sandhya and the Cheyyur property in 1981. According to PTI, she owns four commercial buildings, including one each here and in Hyderabad.
If we count on her cars and vehicles, Jayalalithaa had two Toyoto Prado SUVs, together valued at Rs 40 lakh. The vehicles together worth Rs 42,25,000 which includes a Tempo Traveller, a Tempo Trax, a Mahindra Jeep, an Ambassador car of 1980 make, a Mahindra Bolero, a Swaraj Mazda Maxi, and a Contessa (1990 model).
On her gold jewellery account, the Tamil Nadu CM said the value of 21,280.300 grams could not be ascertained as it was with the Karnataka government treasury in connection with the disproportionate assets case, a ZEE report indicated. She had also mentioned that the assets case was pending in the Supreme Court. She has declared possession of 1,250 kg of silver articles valued at Rs 3,12,50,000.
Jayalalithaa was a ‘partner’ with five firms and altogether she made an investments of worth Rs 27.44 crore. These include Shri Jaya Publications, Floritech Exports, Sasi Enterprises, Royal Valley, Green T Estate and Kodanad Estate. Though she has no investments in NSS, Postal savings, Insurance policies and she had also not given any personal loans or advances to any person or entity, the affidavit stated.
