Here are a few graphic instances of what Jayalalithaa meant for the masses:

All clinical attempts were made to save her life but the popular former film actress and chief minister of Tamil Nadu, widely known as “Amma” or “Mother”, died at the age of 68, after a bitter battle of 75 days, confirmed by the Apollo Hospitals. “Our beloved leader, The Iron Lady of India … is no more,” tweeted her AIADMK party, the third-largest party in Lok Sabha. The funeral is to be held today at 4.30 pm at Marina beach.

The Tamil Nadu government has declared seven days of mourning following Jayalalithaa’s demise and a three-day holiday has been declared for all schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu following Amma’s death. The condolences from everywhere started flooding in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his grief over the demise of Jayalalithaa and led the tributes, tweeting that Jayalalithaa’s death had left a huge void in Indian politics, as per the reports by reuters. “Jayalalithaa ji’s connect with the citizens, concern for welfare of the poor, the women and marginalized will always be a source of inspiration,” Modi said.

From politicians to bollywood actors including Home Minister Rajnath Singh and actor Shah Rukh Khan, have also expressed their deep sadness at Jayalalithaa’s death. Congress president Sonia Gandhi has also condoled the death of the AIADMK leader.

Jayalalithaa was a member of the Upper House from 1984 to 89, and as a mark of respect to the late Tamil chief minister J Jayalalitha, winter parliament session at Rajya Sabha will adjourn for the day.

Overcoming all previous speculation, O Panneerselvam had been elected leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party, clearing his path to be the next chief minister. He later took oath at the Raj Bhavan and officially sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.
