Uri terror attack: 17 soldiers killed in attack on Indian Army’s camp; 4 terrorists neutralised

In one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in recent times, terrorists attacked an Indian Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri area, killing 17 soldiers.

In one of the deadliest attacks on security forces in recent times, terrorists attacked an Indian Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri area, killing 17 soldiers. 19 security personnel have also been injured in the attack. An Indian Army spokesperson has said that four terrorists have been neutralised by the security forces. The attack took place at the Indian Army’s administrative base in Uri. Combing operations are currently underway to sanitise the area.

The terrorists attacked the camp in the wee hours of the morning today. PTI reported that explosions and gunfire erupted as the terrorists attacked the camp, The camp is located barely few metres away from the Indian Army’s Brigade Headquarters in Uri town. Many soldiers from the Dogra Regiment were stationed there and the attack led to tents catching fire. The fire spread to other barracks and this is being seen as the main reason for so many soldiers being martyred. Helicopters from the Indian Army’s 19 divisional headquarters in Baramulla were pressed into service so that the injured Army personnel could be evacuated from the encounter site.

“A group of heavily armed terrorists targeted the rear administrative base of a unit at Uri, Kashmir. In the counter action, four terrorists have been eliminated and combing operations are in progress,” the Army said in a statement. According to ANI, an alert has been sounded in Punjab after the terrorist attack in and extra vigil along the international border has been ordered.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Indian Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag will visit Kashmir in wake of the attack. Parrikar is expected to meet the soldiers who have been injured in the attack. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called for a high-level meet at his residence in the national capital. Home Secretary, Defence Secretary, DGMO, DG CRPF, RAW chief and special director of Intelligence Bureau along with NSA Ajit Doval are attending the meeting, that is currently underway.

Rajnath Singh has postponed his visits to Russia and US, in wake of the attack today. “Spoke to Governor & CM of Jammu & Kashmir regarding the terror attack in Uri. They have apprised me of the security situation in the state. I have given instructions to the Home Secretary and other senior officers in MHA to closely monitor the situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” Rajnath Singh tweeted. “Keeping the situation of Jammu and Kashmir in mind and in the wake of terror attack in Uri, I have postponed my visits to Russia and the USA,” he said.
