A suspected Islamic State (IS) recruit from Tamil Nadu, who was recently nabbed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for allegedly fighting alongside the terrorist in Iraq, has told the probing agency of meeting two operatives from France who participated in the November 2015 Paris attacks.
After having left India in April 2015 Subahani Haja Moideen had spent a few months in Mosul . He informed the NIA sleuths of knowing Paris bombers, Abdelhamid Abaaoud and Salah Abdeslam.
As per an NIA officer, the terror group put Moideen in a group which also had these two individuals. Although he knew them only by their pseudonyms, Moideen could recognise the after he was shown the photographs.
In November last year, at least 100 people were killed in terror attack at a theatre in Paris. However, Moideen claimed he had no idea about the plot then and had returned to India by the time the attacks took place.
While Abaaoud was killed in the retaliatory fire during the Paris attack, Abdelslam continues to be in French police’s custody.
Moideen was held in Tamil Nadu by the agency with the help of central security agencies and other state police. The agency has also informed the French security officials and contacted its embassy in New Delhi.
The French officials may question him after getting the requisite order from court.
Reports suggest that Moideen was allegedly recruited in the terror group through social media platforms. He had left India for Istanbul from Chennai last year on the pretext of performing ‘Umrah’.
