Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed “indomitable spirit, determination and dedication” of women-folk on the occasion of International Women’s Day. PM Modi also underlined that the Centre is working towards to promote ‘economic empowerment’, ‘self-reliance’ and ‘social equality’ of women across the country. “Saluting the indomitable spirit, determination & dedication of Nari Shakti on International Women’s Day. GoI’s various initiatives seek to facilitate economic empowerment, self-reliance & social equality as far as Nari Shakti is concerned. Looking forward to addressing a conclave of women Sarpanchs & honouring trailblazers who have worked towards a Swachh Bharat,” PM Modi tweeted this morning.

Celebrated every year on March 8, International Women’s Day was earlier known as the International Working Women’s Day. This day is celebrated as a salute to all the women from every economic and political background for their love, patience and hard work. It was celebrated for the very first time in 1909 as a social event in the city of New York. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030’ as given by the United Nations. This theme in itself, empowers women through every sphere of their lives.

Mukherjee said that the government has introduced and implemented historic legislations and far sighted programmes for their empowerment and equal participation in nation building and referred to the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

All support should be given so that women realise their aspirations and “enjoy the safety, dignity and unfettered equality that is their sacred right,” he said. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao is an important initiative to prevent female foeticide and provide educational opportunities for female children in India, he said.

The President said that with their incomparable compassion, tolerance and hardwork, generations of Indian women have made an invaluable contribution to the development and progress of the country.

“On this day, I call upon the people of India to reaffirm their commitment to gender equality and the true empowerment of women.
“Let us rededicate our efforts to give them all the support they need to develop to their full potential, realise their aspirations and enjoy the safety, dignity and unfettered equality that is their sacred right,” he said.
