A day after a report came to the fore that free Wi-Fi service in Patna railway station was used mostly to view porn, Public sector undertaking RailTel on Tuesday denied it. “The Wi-Fi provided at stations is the platform to millions of users to connect to internet,” a RailTel spokesperson told IANS. “RailTel, being an Internet Service Provider, does not keep watch over the web sites being browsed by the users. The guidelines being issued by DoT in this regard from time to time are strictly complied with by RailTel,” the spokesperson added. RailTel has provided the WiFi at railway stations along with Google as their technology partner, the official added.

Patna railway station has landed in a controversy after a shocking news came into the fore on Monday that it tops the chart in terms of internet search using the free Wi-Fi service, however, the maximum searches were for porn sites, a railway official has said. According to an IANS report, “More than any other railway station in the country, where free Wi-Fi service was launched, the Patna railway station is on the top in the country for using internet search, particularly search for porn sites,” an official of RailTel, a mini-Ratna public sector undertaking (PSU), said. “It was revealed from our records of use of data by users,” the official said.

Notably, Patna station, under Danapur Division of East Central Railway, is the first station in Bihar to have free Wi-Fi facility. This railway station is one of the crowded as well as the oldest one with more than 200 trains passing through it daily.
