A woman research scholar and wife of a professor were found hanging on the IIT Madras Campus within three hours on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as post-doctoral scholar P Maheswari (34) and Vijaya Lakshmi (47).
Lakshmi’s husband, Ganeshan, teaches Physics at the premier institute. She was found hanging at the family’s room on the campus around 4 pm on Wednesday.
The body of Maheshwari was found in her hostel room within three hours of the first incident. She was married for 12 years and had a son.
Police sources said she was reportedly “depressed” and had attempted to kill herself earlier as well.
While police are further investigating the cases, a senior police official said they suspected “family issues” could have forced them to take the extreme step.
IIT Madras condoled the deaths.
“IIT Madras reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar in the campus. The scholar’s family has been informed. The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss,” the institute said in a statement.
It added that the institute was taking “necessary action and extending full cooperation to civil authorities.”
Two students had earlier committed suicide at IIT Madras in September and October last year.
