Currently, Congress has an upper-hand in the house. It sits on 36 seats in the 68-member House, while BJP has 26. Congress has already announced Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as the party’s chief ministerial candidate last week. He has served as chief minister for six terms. The Himachal Pradesh election is of more importance to Congress than BJP as it is one of the few states left in India where party still has strongholds in the country. Bharatiya Janata Party, on the other hand, doesn’t have much to lose but Narendra Modi and Amit Shah would like to extend their dominance by winning again.

Last week, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi did a rally in Mandi where he asked the people of Himachal to compare the five years of Virbhadra’s government with the BJP government in Gujarat for the same period. “China gives jobs to 50,000 youth and Modi government 450 youths per day,” Rahul Gandhi claimed, according to The Indian Express. The Assembly elections are likely to be held before the end of the year.
