Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh rape verdict: Airfares on the Delhi-Chandigarh route have skyrocketed due to the fear that the flow of traffic on the National Highway-1 (NH-1) may be disrupted by the followers of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh ji Insaan ahead of his appearance in court in connection with a rape case. The prices of air tickets from Chandigarh to Delhi, which cost close to Rs 3,000, have in some instances seen a four-fold hike and are selling for as much as Rs 16,000, according to an India Today report.
A special Central Bureau of investigation court had last week said that it would pronounce the judgement in the sexual harassment case involving the Dera chief on August 25, as per an India TV report. The court had asked Ram Rahim to be present in the court during the announcement of the verdict. The government of Punjab and Haryana have asked the Centre for additional central forces if the verdict goes against Ram Rahim, as per newswire service PTI.
The Chief Secretaries and Police Chiefs of both Punjab and Haryana had also met the Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi in Delhi to discuss the security arrangements in the two states. Haryana DGP BS Sandhu said that Punjab has asked for 250 companies of Central forces and Haryana has asked for a sufficient number of forces. The Police Chief said that his force is ready and will not allow the situation in the state to deteriorate. Meanwhile, Ram Rahim has asked his followers to not resort to violence.
