Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan on Tuesday alleged that ‘gundaraj and jungle raj’ prevails in Uttar Pradesh, where there is a serious threat to the lives and liberty of the people.

Bhushan, who was reacting on the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) Government’s move to suspend senior IPS officer Amitabh Thakur on various charges, including violating official disciplinary norms, said there is a situation of ‘gundaraj and jungle raj’ in Uttar Pradesh where the people are openly threatened and journalists are killed.

“Where if a senior police officer raises an issue of public interest, he is threatened. When he complains about his threat, his FIR is not registered but a counter FIR for rape against him is registered and then he is placed under suspension,” Bhushan told ANI here.

“This kind of virtual ‘gundaraj’ that is prevailing in UP is a very serious threat to the lives and liberty of the people of UP,” he added.

The suspension of Thakur, an IG-level officer, came with immediate effect last night. The IPS officer had yesterday approached the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) seeking a CBI probe into the rape case filed against him after he lodged a complaint against Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for threatening him.

Thakur had lodged a complaint at the Hazratganj police station last week and on Monday met union home ministry officials with regards to his security and the alleged threat call by Mulayam Singh.

The IPS officer, who has sought central force protection for himself and his wife and social activist Nutan Thakur, is expected to challenge the suspension.
