Gujarat Rajya Sabha Elections 2017: The Rajya Sabha Elections in the Gujarat are underway. The voting for three seats started at 9 AM and will continue till 4 PM, while the counting will begin at 5 PM. Earlier in the day, the Congress received a major jolt when two of its leaders admitted they voted for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “I have voted for Congress”, ABP News quoted Chhotubhai Vasava of JD (U) as saying. Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia confirmed Chotu Bhai Vasava’s move while talking to the media. He said, “We have got 43 votes so far, 1 MLA is going to vote. Chhotubhai Vasava (JD-U) publicly said he voted for Ahmed bhai.” He added, “We have already bagged more votes than what is needed.”
Interestingly, JD(U) chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently joined hands with BJP after breaking the two-year-old grand alliance with Congress and RJD. However, according to latest developments, Janata Dal United’s K. C. Tyagi said that Vasana who claims that he has voted for Congress has actually voted for Bharatiya Janata Party, according to India Today.
Out of the 182 members in the Gujarat Assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 122 seats, including dissident Nalin Kotadiya, while congress has 51 MLAs along with seven of Shankarinh Vaghela’s camp. Along with them, two members are from NCP and one from JD-U. The Congress party needs support of 45 MLAs for victory of Ahmed Patel, who is contesting for his fifth term in Upper House. While the victory of BJP’s Amit Shah and Smriti Irani are almost certain, fate of the third candidate Balwantsinh Rajput stands unknown till the time results are declared.
